Supply of cod and other fish from Murmansk to dwindle in 2025

November 2, 2024 23:23

At the 54th session of the Mixed Russian-Norwegian Fisheries Commission, the total allowable catch of Northeast Arctic cod in 2025 was reduced by 25% and amounted to 340,000 metric tons, while Russia's quota was down to 144,436 tons.

The TAC of the north-eastern Arctic haddock is 7.8% lower than the level of the current year and amounted to 130,000 tons, the quota of Russia was 52,468 tons.

The TACs of redfish and black halibut were reduced to 67,191 tons of redfish (a decrease of 4%) and to 19,000 tons of halibut (a decrease of 10.6%). Russia's quota is 14,094 tons of perch and 7,875 tons of halibut.

At the same time, it was decided not to fish for capelin in the Barents Sea in 2025, the TAC of which in 2024 amounted to 196,000 tons.

The TAC of redfish has been reduced by only 2,973 tons, which indicates the good condition of this stock, and the TAC of black halibut has not undergone as strong a decrease as fishermen feared. But this will not significantly compensate for the reduction in cod and haddock quotas, as well as zero capelin catch.

Additionally, Russia will have the opportunity to catch 4,200 tons of redfish in Norwegian waters (by-catch and direct fishing) and 12,200 tons of saithe as by-catch.

It is important that cooperation between Russia and Norway in the field of fisheries continues and ensures the sustainable management of joint stocks in the North-East Atlantic.
