NAFO approved overall TACs and Russia’s fishing quotas for 2021

The NAFO has made public the total allowable catch, as well as Russia's fishing quotas in the NAFO regulatory area (North-West Atlantic) in 2021, reports Megafishnet.com.

The dynamics of the quotas in 2018-2021 is disappointing for the Russian fishermen only as regards Atlantic cod while the other species have been stable or slightly rising.

The table shows that in 2021, the TAC and, accordingly, the Russian cod quota of the 3M division (Flemish Cap Bank) has dropped significantly compared to previous years.

According to the NAFO Scientific Committee, the recruitment of this stock has been weak in recent years, and the biomass is decreasing. Guided by the precautionary approach, the Scientific Committee recommended a significant reduction in TAC, a recommendation that was adopted at the NAFO annual session.

In addition, a prohibited period for cod fishing was established – from January 1 to March 31, 2021, the need to use a selective grid, and control of unloading at designated ports. In the new conditions of cod fishing, the value of this resource for Russia becomes insignificant.
