Statement on Transgenic salmon Cooke Aquaculture Inc

September 13, 2010 14:03

Cooke Aquaculture does not produce or sell genetically modified or transgenic salmon, reports www.megafishnet.com with reference to Cooke Aquaculture.

Our position on the commercial production of transgenic or genetically modified fish is consistent with that of the International Salmon Farmers Association (ISFA). That position was set more than ten years ago but was ratified again in 2002 as follows:

RESOLVED to reconfirm the policy adopted at the Seventeenth General Meeting of the International Salmon Farmers Association: "In accordance with sound environmental practice, the ISFA firmly rejects transgenic salmon production."

This position is also consisted with the Canadian Aquaculture Industry Alliance (CAIA), which does not support the commercial production of transgenic fish until it has been declared safe by all relevant regulatory bodies and consumers demand such fish. Neither of these conditions presently exist.
