According to market players, the authorities are stepping up efforts to crack down on the shadow sector of the Russian salmon market which is said to display a high degree of legality this year.

Along these lines, Russia's Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance Rosselkhoznadzor seized ca.5 tonnes (4922 kilos namely) of salmon caviar arriving in Moscow airports from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Magadan, Khabarovsk and Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, a spokesman of Rosselkhoznadzor told www.fishnet.ru (click on English version or go direct to http://www.fishnet-russia.com/).

The vets arrested several product consignments with the smallest lot of caviar amounting to 52 kilos. The reason behind the arrest was that none of the lots had documents proving legality of the goods' origin and processing. Besides, the vets found that the caviar products had no accompanying documents confirming compliance with the current Russian veterinary standards.
