Proposal to cut cod quota by 50 percent

November 22, 2010 11:05

The European Commission is recommending a reduction of up to 50 percent in cod quota in Union waters in 2011, reports http://www.megafishnet.com/ with reference to Iceland Seafood International.

Ms. Maria Daminaki, the EU Commissioner for Fisheries, said there was nothing to indicate a recovery of the cod stocks west of Scotland, in the Irish Sea and in the North Sea and for this reason, there was full need for  further protective measures.  The fisheries ministers of the member states will make a final decision on 2011 quotas at their meeting in mid December.
