Overview of Russian import of trout and trout fillets in 2009 and first quarter 2010
Having analyzed the Russian import of trout analysts of http://www.megafishnet.com/ concluded that the bulk of trout products were imported to Russia under the following HSC codes: 0304191500, 0304191700, 0304291500, 0304291700, 0302111000, 0302112000, 0302118000, 0303211000, 0303212000 and 0303218000.
First quarter 2010
Total import volume of fresh, chilled and frozen trout (including fillets) to the Russian Federation in the first quarter 2010 amounted to 9,056 tonnes, 14% down in comparison with 10,545 tonnes in the first quarter of 2009. On the contrary import value rose to RUR1.599 billion as compared with RUR1.557 billion in the same period 2009 due to the rise of average import price by 19.5%.
Chilled trout
Import volume of chilled trout to the Russian Federation in the first quarter of 2010 totaled 5,504 tonnes, 21% down in comparison with 6,964 tonnes in the same period 2009. Import value on the contrary rose to RUR1.061 billion in comparison with RUR1.006 bullion in the same period 2009 due to the rise of average import price by 34%.

In the first quarter of 2010 chilled trout was imported not only from Norway, which decreased supplies from 6,955 tonnes to 5,226 tonnes, but also from the Faroe Islands (221 tonnes), Armenia (35 tonnes), Denmark (16 tonnes), Australia and Turkey. Considerable increase in price and decrease in supply made importers find new alternative supply sources.

In the first quarter of 2010 supplies of chilled trout were reduced by the following importers: ZАО Russian Fish Company, ООО Profibusiness and OOO Akra. Such importers as ООО Sebastes, ZАО Atlant-Pacific, OOO Neptun and ZАО Golfstream on the contrary increased supplies.

Frozen trout
Russian import volume of frozen trout in first quarter 2010 grew by 3% from 3,085 tonnes in first quarter 2009 to 3,191 tonnes. The average import price in first quarter 2010 grew by 10%. Thanks to this fact import value in first quarter 2010 grew by more than 13%.

In first quarter 2010 import of frozen trout from Chile (the largest supplier of this product to Russia) jumped more than 2.4 times from 748 tonnes in first quarter 2009 to 1,810 tonnes. Import from Norway which is the second largest supplier, decreased 2.7 times from 1,212 tonnes to 440 tonnes. Import from Denmark also decreased from 912 tonnes to 438 tonnes.

Trout fillets
In the first quarter of 2010 import of trout fillets to the Russian Federation totaled just 133 tonnes from which 116 tonnes were imported by Saint-Petersburg-based company OOO Neptun (OAO ROK-1) and the rest volume was imported by Kaliningrad-based company OOO Technolat.
In the first quarter of 2009 import of trout fillets to the Russian Federation totaled 143 tonnes from which 89 tonnes were imported by OOO Neptun and 54 tonnes - by OOO Technolat.

Total import volume of fresh, chilled and frozen trout (including fillets) to the Russian Federation in the first quarter of 2009 amounted to 52,645 tonnes, 14% down in comparison with 59,937 tonnes in 2008.
Chilled trout
In 2009 import volume of chilled trout to the Russian Federation totaled 34,019 tonnes valued at RUR 7.9 billion, 8% up as compared with 31,515 tonnes in 2008. Despite general import fall shipments of chilled products increased. This fact indicates that Russian processors are gradually switching to chilled raw material.

It is followed by OOO Profibusiness (OOO ITA Severnaya Company) with 4,963 tonnes or 14.5% share of total volume, OОО AKRA (GK Defa) with 4,241 tonnes or 12.4% share and ZАО Atlant-Pacific with 3,564 tonnes or 10.7% share.

In 2009 the largest suppliers of frozen trout to the Russian Federation were Chile (48.6%), Norway (22.6%), Denmark (12.5%) and the Faroe Islands (6.9%). Import from Chile decreased more than by half from 17,257 tonnes in 2008 to 7,912 tonnes. Import from Norway also fell from 4,626 tonnes to 3,686 tonnes. Import from Denmark fell from 3,863 tonnes to 2,044 tonnes.

In 2009 import of frozen trout to the Russian Federation was carried out by 64 importers. The main supplier of frozen trout to the Russian Federation was ZAO Russian Fish Company with 2,066 tonnes or 12.7% share of total volume. It is followed by ZАО Golfstream with 1,847 tonnes or 11.3% share, ZАО Atlant-Pacific with 1,568 tonnes or 9.6% share.

Trout fillets
Import volume of trout fillets to the Russian Federation in 2009 totaled 747 tonnes from which about 170 tonnes were supplied by Kaliningrad-based companies. They first imported whole fish to the customs territory of Kaliningrad Region and added value to the products which were then supplied to the customs territory of the Russian Federation. In fact this volume of fillets was not import products. Thus net import volume of trout fillets to the Russian Federation in 2009 totaled 575 tonnes as compared with 153 tonnes in 2008.
