Norwegian Salmon Exports beat all Records
Exports of Norwegian Salmon in the first nine months of the year increased in value by NOK 5.1 billion to NOK 21.9 billion compared to the same period last year. This is an increase of no less than 30% and marks the highest value for third-quarter exports of Norwegian Salmon ever registered. The growth rate also sets a record as the biggest increase in the value of exports of Norwegian Salmon, reports www.megafishnet.com with reference to NSEC.
"The growth we are seeing in exports of Norwegian Salmon is attributable to both an increase in the volume of exports and increased prices, and reflects the continuing strong global demand for salmon as well as reduced competition," explains Paul Aandahl, market analyst from the Norwegian Seafood Export Council.
September also saw a new record for Norwegian Salmon exports, which increased in value by NOK 737 million or 34% to NOK 2.9 billion. This is the highest export value ever registered for Norwegian Salmon in a single month.
Norwegian Salmon prices remain high
The average export price for fresh whole Norwegian Salmon in the third quarter was NOK 37.17, up by NOK 5.24 compared to the same period last year. In September, the average price was NOK 37.38, up by NOK 7.89 from September 2009, although down by NOK 2.41 compared to the previous month.
EU market still the biggest, but other regions showing stronger growth
The EU market is Norway's most important salmon export market, accounting for 2/3 of the total value of all Norwegian Salmon exports. This year to date, the value of Norwegian Salmon exports to the EU has increased by 21%. By comparison, the value of exports to eastern Europe has increased by 69%, and to Asia and the USA by 41% and 76% respectively.
France is the biggest market in the EU for Norwegian Salmon, although exports to countries where major further processing takes place have shown the biggest increase. Exports of Norwegian Salmon to Poland and Denmark increased in value by NOK 568 million and NOK 441 million respectively, while the value of exports to Lithuania increased by NOK 427 million. This is more than double compared to the same period last year.
Strong growth in exports to Russia
The value of Norwegian Salmon exports to Russia in the first nine months of this year totalled NOK 2 billion. This is an increaser of NOK 748 million compared to the same period last year. This makes Russia the third biggest export market for Norwegian Salmon after France and Poland.
Biggest growth in exports to USA
In the third quarter, the value of exports of Norwegian Salmon to the USA increased by no less than 82% to a total value of NOK 1.7 billion. The growth in exports for the year to date totals NOK 773 million. This is the strongest growth in any single market during this period and is due to growth in exports of Norwegian Salmon fillets.
Downturn in exports of Norwegian Fjord Trout
Exports of Norwegian Fjord Trout in the third quarter declined in value by 24% to NOK 1.1 billion compared to the same period last year. The biggest export market for Norwegian Fjord Trout is Russia, which saw exports decline by 29% to NOK 572 million. China is the next biggest market, with an export value of NOK 98 million. While fresh Norwegian Fjord Trout is the most popular in Russia, frozen Norwegian Fjord Trout takes premium position in China.
