New USDA Dietary Guidelines Emphasize Importance of Seafood-Rich Diet

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), recently released the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the federal government's evidence-based nutritional guidance to promote health, reduce the risk of chronic diseases, and diminish the prevalence of obesity. The new guidelines strongly urge Americans, including pregnant and breastfeeding women, to eat seafood at least twice each week for heart and brain benefits, reports www.megafishnet.com with reference to Icelandic USA.

Icelandic USA, Inc., one of the country's foremost seafood companies, acknowledges and affirms the relevancy of the conclusions from the prestigious report. Jim Papadakis, Director of Marketing at Icelandic® USA, commented on the findings, "We are incredibly encouraged to gain the support of the country's most reputable nutrition experts, emphasizing the importance of seafood consumption for significant health benefits." Papadakis went on to say, "It is especially important to recognize the momentous impact these findings will have for pregnant women, as Omega-3s found in seafood are proving more than ever, to be a vital element for fetal brain growth."

The report highlights seafood as an essential dietary element that should be consumed more frequently for key health benefits. Currently, the United States' average weekly seafood intake is 3.5 ounces per person; the recommendation advises Americans to increase seafood consumption to 8 ounces per week, per person. According to the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, "Moderate evidence shows that consumption of about 8 ounces per week of a variety of seafood, which provide an average consumption of 250 mg per day of EPA and DHA, is associated with reduced cardiac deaths among individuals with and without pre-existing cardiovascular disease. Thus, this recommendation contributes to the prevention of heart disease." Diets low in seafood are known to increase the risk of heart disease, the number one cause of death among American men and women.  Additionally, the new guidelines call attention to the importance of seafood consumption for fetal growth and early childhood development. The guidelines report, "The nutritional value of seafood is of particular importance during fetal growth and development, as well as in early infancy and childhood." Omega-3s are critical for the support of brain development; Omega-3s found in seafood serve as an important precursor to normal brain progression. Currently, consumer survey data from SeaPak shows that 91 percent of parents with children 12 years and younger, say their children aren't eating seafood twice per week.
