MURMANSK: Overview of freshfrozen seafood market as per 16 February 2011
As per 16 February 2011 the main developments on the freshfrozen seafood market in Murmansk were connected with capelin fishery. Among other events catches of cod in the Barents Sea and the Norwegian Sea were showing positive trends, reports http://www.megafishnet.com/.
Capelin
Capelin catch amounted to about 2,000- 2,500 tonnes per 24 hours. About 20 vessels took part in the fishery and the situation was stable. The quota take-up amounted to 34,300 tonnes or 33%. The capelin size varied from 35 to 46 fish per kilo. Roe content amounted to 12%. The share of harvested female and male individuals amounted to 1/3 at the west of Rybachy Peninsula while in Eastern part of the peninsula females prevailed.
Cod
FOB prices of Atlantic cod showed negative trends. In particular, prices of trawl cod head-off originating from the Norwegian Sea and the Barents Sea amounted to about USD2,900.00 per tonne. In Russia the price was expected to drop considerably to the level of RUR95.00 per kilo.
Haddock
Due to large landings in Murmansk prices of haddock moved downwards though they were still higher than in Europe. Meanwhile, as per 16 February 2011 that downward trend affected only haddock prices in electronic weight, when they dropped from RUR80.00 per kilo to RUR76.00 - 78.00 per kilo.
Herring
Herring prices stabilized at historically high level. In a situation of absent coldstore inventories traders actually lost interest in the product.
Polar cod (Boreogadus saida)
Prices of polar cod continued falling, volumes of the species in Murmansk were considerably high.
Coldstores and freezing transport
Freight prices kept on growing. As of 21 February 2011 transportation by isolated thermos cars is expected to be growing more expensive. In the port of Murmansk there were still availability problems with vacant spaces at coldstore facilities and refrigerated transport vehicles.
