In late May 2009 OAO Murmansk Fish Combine (plc) has launched a new unit for clipfisk production, reports www.fishnet-russia.com (www.fishnet.ru) with reference to Promurman.

The investments into new equipment and repair of production facilities total 1 million RUR.

Clipfisk is a product highly popular in Europe, mostly in Portugal and France. Earlier when the Russian fishery industry has been strictly linked to GOST state standards and clipfisk has been produced exclusively onboard from newly caught cod. It is not yet clear which raw Murmansk Fish Combine will use. It is only known that the raw material will be of the Russian origin. The new facility's design capacity is 15-20 tonnes per shift with the total workforce amounting to 12 people. So far the unit has been staying idle waiting for the raw fish and production orders from abroad.

In Russia clipfisk is not popular due to its complicated production technology, high price of 4-8 Euro per kilo and short supply of chilled or frozen cod as raw material.

Murmansk Fish Combine is a fish processor located in the northern cargo district of Murmansk Fish Port. When the country had been through privatization processes, the company remained named after Murmansk Fish Combine which was a well-known brand in the former USSR. Now the company claims that it runs one of the few plants in Murmansk which is capable of handling chilled capelin and producing onshore cod fillets of export quality for foreign companies. (However some 20 trawlers produce frozen at sea fillets).
