Rupert Howes, chief executive of the Marine Stewardship Council, today announced the appointment of Mike Wetherell to the new post of MSC chief operating officer.  The post will be based in the London headquarters of the MSC, reports www.megafishnet.com with reference to MSC.

Welcoming Mike to the MSC senior management team, Rupert Howes said: "This is an important appointment for the MSC.  Global interest and participation in the MSC certification programme for sustainable seafood has expanded rapidly in the last five years - we are now working with over 200 fisheries, either certified or in formal assessment, and there are MSC labelled products on retailers' shelves in every continent.  We must ensure that we grow and develop in the most efficient way possible, and that our internal organisation continues to support our goal of transforming the market for seafood and assuring a sustainable future for the world's oceans."

"Mike's experience in leading and strengthening social enterprises, so that they are capable of meeting new challenges and changing environments, will be invaluable at this stage of the MSC's development, and I am delighted to welcome him as a colleague."

Prior to joining the MSC, Mike held a number of roles in not-for-profit, educational, regulatory and standard setting bodies, including chief of staff at the Prince's Foundation for the Built Environment; head of international at the Chartered Institute of Building; director general of the Landscape Institute; and director of education at the Architects Registration Board.  He said, "I was extremely fortunate to be presented with an opportunity to join the MSC and to work with a team so committed to contributing to the global sustainability agenda."
