Pollock fishery constraints leading to emphasis on herring in the Russian Far East
As the Chinese market constraints continue to hit the pollock season in the Russian Far East, the fishermen are putting more effort into herring received by the market with an increasing favour. Despite the problems, the trading sources from the region describe the current situation as stable in terms of demand for the entire species range with several items displaying rising prices, reports Megafishnet.com.
In particular, the domestic market in the region has been showing a steady demand for Alaska Pollock, mackerel, cod, APO roe and saffron cod. Both small winter herring and April herring haму been growing more popular in Russia.
The situation with the Chinese ports remains unchanged with only container terminals never closed for fish cargoes.
Meanwhile frozen seafood delivery tariff from Vladivostok to Moscow by railway grew to RUR16-17 per kg. There is a shortage of rolling stock.
Alaska pollock
Prices for headed pollock remain stable. The fishing situation remains weak with catches lagging well behind the last year result. As per 4 March 2021, the lag exceeded 145,500 tonnes or 24.6% YOY with the APO catch totaling 446,800 MT.
On the international market the supply of Russian HG pollock 20+ is short. Russian HG pollock 25+ has been appreciating and now the price is USD1,350-1,400 per tonne CFR China.
Due to the situation in China, Russian-made fillets and minced meat are in high demand in the EU. APO fillets and mince made in Russia are delivered to the European market where they enjoy a strong demand and rising prices.

Pacific Herring
The demand for small herring on the Russian market has been growing. Market participants begin negotiations on April herring. The price is formed from RUR48+ per kg.
The demand from the international buyers is high. Producers plan to switch to herring fishery in early April, and that will again affect the pollock volumes adversely.
