Developments in key markets for fish products from Russian and American Pacific fisheries as per early August 2011
Salmon fisheries as well as Pollock and Pollock roe shipments to Japan, China and Korea have produced the most interesting developments, reports http://www.megafishnet.com/ with reference to Russian, American and Japanese sources.
Salmon. Both Russian and American pink salmon fisheries developed efficiently. Alaska catch by beginning of the second ten day period of August achieved 67 million, i.e. about 105 thousand MT. Forecasted volume is 210-200 thousand MT.
In Russia as per 18 August 2011 the volume exceeded 400 000MT with some of Sakhalin fisheries however somewhat behind the projections. (See article «Kamchatka making greatest contribution to record salmon catch in the Russian Far East»).
As for chum Alaska got just 12 million, -15% to 2010 level, though 5% increase had been forecasted. Catch volume by the moment was estimated at 42.0-42.5 thousand tons, while seasonal volume - 70.0. As for Russian fishery, it is a bit early to discuss as greater part of the harvest is to be taken in Amur and Okhotsk shore. Though, current estimates are not very good, and experts doubt whether planned 103.5 thousand tones could be taken.
It's also worth mentioning that the forecast of chum catch in Japan for 2011 is not good either. The season is to start this week and it is promised to become second in row with low volume. Taking into account the fact that Chinese authorities are extremely concerned with possible radioactivity of Japanese raw material, it is possible that American and Russian fish would have priority demand.
