International Fish Meal and Fish Oil Organization Members Meeting Miami 2010
The 2010 IFFO Members Meeting was held at the Ritz Carlton Coconut Grove in Miami on April 12th and 14th, and attended by over 90 delegates coming from 14 different countries, reports www.megafishnet.com with reference to International Fish Meal and Fish Oil Organization.
Day 1 of the Market Forum opened with a presentation on Economic Environment and Commodity Markets by Richard Brock followed by the summary of the members statistics presented by Enrico Bachis. The session concluded with the country presentations from Peru, Chile, Denmark, Faroe Islands, Iceland, Norway, UK/Ireland, USA, South Africa, Ecuador and India. Chile South included a presentation about the effects of the earthquake and tsunami, showing less of a decrease in the 2010 production than had previously been expected.
In the afternoon technical meeting, Andrew Jackson gave his usual update, this time including the Global Standard for Responsible Supply, the Mass Balance of fishmeal & fish oil production and eco-efficiency, Contaminant Legislation in EU and the latest Fishmeal Trials in China. Adam Ismail from GOED then followed with a presentation on EU Omega-3 Health Claims and details of the Californian lawsuit on PCBs in fish oil capsules. Other items included a discussion on the development of a CODEX Alimentarius for fish oil and starch-free diets for carnivorous fish by Mark Griffin from Omega Protein. The session concluded with a technical update from China by Wenpu Jin, including information on the classification of fish oil according to Chinese National Fish Oil Standard, a re-cap of the AQSIQ lists, and application issues relating to Chinese Licenses for fishmeal and fish oil and the new service provided to IFFO members.
In the evening the delegates plus a dozen companions enjoyed an alfresco dinner after being warmly welcomed by Humberto Speziani in his first IFFO event as President.
Day 2 of the Market Forum started with a China Fishmeal Market Update by Wenpu Jin. It was then the turn of the presentations by the Premium Associate Members, starting with Felipe Ureta from Biomar, showing how the Chilean salmon industry is recovering from the ISA disease. Adam Ismail from GOED then gave a magnificent presentation on The Future of Fish Oils in the Omega-3 Market. The session concluded with presentations from the aqua feed companies on the current usage trends of fishmeal and fish oil in aquaculture, followed by a summary from the acting chair of the Market Forum, Nils Christian Jensen.
The members meeting also includes a board meeting and one of the main decisions was to approve the development of an improvers programme for the Global Standard for Responsible Supply (RS).
