SHELTERING IN SUDUROY

Pelagic vessels Faxi RE and Ingunn AK left Tvøroyri on the Faroese island of Suduroy at midday yesterday, setting course for the blue whiting grounds south of the Faroes after having sat out a storm in port.

‘We were tied up for around 24 hours because of the weather, but it has been pretty rough all the time,’ said Hjalti Einarsson, who is skippering Faxi this trip, when we spoke to him yesterday. He said that Ingunn wasn’t far behind and they expected to be on the fishing grounds that evening.
Faxi has around 1000 tonnes of blue whiting in its tanks and ideally needs another 1500 tonnes before making for Vopnafjördur.

‘There was a storm blowing when we got here and we shot away on the 2nd of May, getting 200 tonnes in our first haul. Then the weather blew up and we were lucky enough to make it 1000 tonnes before conditions started to get properly bad yesterday,’ he said, satisfied with their results so far.

‘The fishing has been better, but overall the fishing is fine. We could do with larger fish, but that’s not something we have much control over,’ Hjalti Einarsson said.

As many as twelve Icelandic vessels can fish in Faroese waters at any one time, and this arrangement has not delayed fishing. Lundey NS is now in Vopnafjördur with a full load.
