Onboard equipment for broadband internet access proving success in trials

The Center for the Monitoring System of Fisheries and Communications and Gazprom Space Systems have successfully completed tests of a satellite communication system based on domestic satellites of the Yamal series onboard fishing vessels, reports Megafishnet.com.

According to Fishnews, testing was carried out onboard vessels in the Far Eastern, Northern and Azov-Black Sea fisheries basins in October-December 2021. Earth stations of marine satellite communication and auxiliary equipment were installed onboard the vessels.

The test results were recognized as successful. Stable access to the Internet was provided on the ships, official information was transmitted, video broadcasting was conducted in real time. The equipment works reliably, which has been confirmed during tests in various climatic conditions, including in the area of 78 degrees north latitude, according to Alexander Mikhailov, acting head of the Center for the Monitoring System of Fisheries and Communications.

Based on the results of the tests, the CSMS, together with Gazprom Space Systems, will send proposals to Rosrybolovstvo on equipping subordinate vessels, as well as prepare commercial proposals for shipowners on the use of a domestic satellite communication system onboard fishing vessels.

In 2021 CSMS and Gazprom Space Systems signed a cooperation agreement providing for the organization of satellite communication channels using Russian equipment, including broadband Internet access.

Gazprom Space Systems is the operator of the Yamal satellite communication and broadcasting system, develops a technologically new aerospace monitoring system for Russia called "Review", provides telecommunications and geoinformation services. Gazprom is the main consumer of Yamal system services. Gazprom Space Systems' clients include federal executive authorities and government agencies, television companies, Russian and foreign commercial service providers.
