Kamchatka building infrastructure to ship fish along Northern Sea Route
For the Kamchatka Territory, the development of the Northern Sea Route is of a strategic nature, as it opens up new opportunities for the region not only in the transportation of fish products, but also other important cargoes for the region, reports Megafishnet.com.
According to Kamchatka government, with the above perspective in mind, the necessary infrastructure is being actively formed in the region. For example, loading of the lighter atomic carrier with fish in September 2020 was carried out by " Seroglazka Terminal " LLC which implements the investment project "Creation of a modern international sea refrigerator terminal for complex servicing of fishing vessels and organization of transshipment of refrigerated and dry container cargoes".
Today, this facility is already operating with the fish products turnover exceeding 100 thousand metric tons in 2019. Now the company is implementing the next phase of the large investment project worth more than 3 billion rubles. Within the next few years, it is planned to increase the fish transshipment volume up to 300-400 thousand MT per year.
In addition to the Seroglazka terminal, the Kamchatka Shipping Company also carries out a certain amount of transportation by reefer containers and is considering the possibility of increasing these capacities.
In the logistics scheme for the fish products delivery along the Northern Sea Route, it is also planned to use the complex for transshipment of aquatic bioresources, which is to be built in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky by the government-owned National Fish Resources Company (NFR).
Besides, Russia’s Federal Agency for Fisheries (FAF) and NFR are reconstructing three piers that can potentially be used for the development of the Northern Sea Route.
It is planned that the logistics complex created here will be able to provide monthly transshipment of at least 20 thousand MT of fish and fish products. Currently, the first stage of the reconstruction has been completed, the full completion and hydraulic structures commissioning is planned for 2021.
At the same time, FAF is working on the organization of a permanent shipping line along the Northern Sea Route. The draft plan will include measures to develop port, logistics and ship repair infrastructures, as well as to reduce tariffs for transportation along the Northern Sea Route.
The development of infrastructure for the Northern Sea Route will increase the volume of products handled and reduce the cost of cargo transportation.
In September 2020, the nuclear-powered container carrier Sevmorput (Northern Sea Route) transported 206 refrigerated containers with fish products of a total weight of 5.3 thousand metric tons to St. Petersburg.
