GOOD TRIP – ALTHOUGH MORE SAITHE WOULD HAVE BEEN WELCOME
Fresher trawler Ásbjörn was due to dock in Reykjavík last night after a trip on Westfjords grounds. Ásbjörn has 130 tonnes of fish in its fishroom, most of it cod.
‘We started the trip off the south coast searching for saithe. But there wasn’t much to be had other than redfish so we soon switched to the Westfjords,’ said skipper Fridleifur Einarsson when we spoke to him yesterday as they were steaming home.
They also searched for saithe off the west coast, but he said that there were no signs of saithe in viable amounts.
‘We caught mostly top quality cod with some saithe by-catch. The average cod weight is four kilos, so this is all large, fine quality fish,” he said, adding that this was a trip in perfect weather all the time they were on the Westfjords grounds – in contrast to the storm that had been blowing only the day before Ásbjörn arrived there.
