HB Grandi: Good season for redfish

June 30, 2010 09:00

Four of HB Grandi's five factory freezer trawlers have finished this year's season on deep sea ocean redfish with a combined catch of 4600 tonnes. Although there had been expectations that it would be a struggle to catch this year's quota, fishing was in fact steady and there are hopes that this indicates a strengthening of the redfish stock on the Reykjanes Ridge beyond what had been estimated, reports www.megafishnet.com with reference to HB Grandi.

‘Fishing on redfish went well all through May and we managed to catch all our quotas quicker than had been expected,' said Birkir Hrannar Hjálmarsson, who manages HB Grandi's trawlers, adding that all five of the company's freezers are now fishing in home waters, although the redfish season is expected to last another month.
‘The problem is that we don't have much quota left on redfish or cod, so we are concentrating on haddock, saithe and Greenland halibut. We're doing everything we can to avoid cod and redfish, and those species are only taken as a by-catch with other fisheries,' Birkir Hrannar Hjalmarsson said.
