Searching for mackerel in the herring loophole

September 2, 2015 11:06

~~‘It’s very quiet. A lot of boats went up north to search for mackerel and although there’s quite a fleet here, there doesn’t appear to be much fishing. We got here today and took one short haul for a hundred tonnes of mackerel,’ said Gudlaugur Jónsson, skipper of Venus.

When we spoke to him earlier Venus was in the herring loophole in a position approximately 300 nautical miles from Vopnafjördur. He said that there has been little mackerel to be seen inside the Icelandic EEZ over the last week or so, at the same time as Atlanto-Scandian herring has become a higher proportion of catches in home waters.

‘We’re making efforts to catch mackerel as much as possible, and keep the herring quota back for the autumn, which is why we’ve steamed north this time,’ Gudlaugur Jónsson said.
