‘We've been on the Hali grounds the last few days and conditions here are excellent. There is a lot of capelin here, so the fish is in good condition and unusually big. For example, the saithe we had the other day were that big that we had to hand fillet around half of it that was too big for the filleting machines,' said Trausti Egilsson, skipper of HB Grandi's factory trawler Orfirisey RE, although when we spoke to him, the ship was heading for a lee in the Isafjordur Deep to sit out a storm, reports www.megafishnet.com.

Slow search for capelin

Not a great deal of capelin has been found on fishing grounds off the Westfjords after research vessel Arni Fridriksson yesterday reported some decent marks of large capelin there. Five or six pelagic vessels are now in the area and with poor weather forecast, it seems likely that the search will be brought to a close after this evening, reports www.megafishnet.com.

Lundey NS was scheduled to dock this morning in Vopnafjordur with 850 tonnes of herring on board, all caught on Sunday in a single shot in Breidasund, just inside Stykkisholmur. This means that HB Grandi's quota for Icelandic summer spawning herring for the year has been caught now that the company fleet has taken 5000 tonnes. This also means that the herring fishery comes to an end for the moment, reports www.megafishnet.com with reference to HB Grandi.

Russia nursing $20 billion newbuilding plan for fishing fleets renewal
FISHERY AND PROCESSING
November 21, 2011 08:17

According to fishing fleets’ managers Russia is virtually facing a situation of forthcoming rapid fleet decline because of old age and condition of the fishing boats unless urgent measures are taken to rectify the problem. So far the options explored to take the challenge have had to do with rebuilding, conversion and refitting. For example, Pacific Andes, very active in an indirect way in Russian pollock fisheries, has recently preferred to extend the hull of a BATM large trawler, convert an old tanker to a mothership and start refitting the 10 year + old Victoria floating processor currently rusting in China. The fast growing Karat Group (the new owner of Kamchatka-based Akros) has sold two old boats to buy a 15-year old supertrawler. However neither rebuilding nor purchase of second-hand vessels is an adequate answer to the threat. Could an international solution be found for the huge task by combining the forces of the newly-formed giant United Shipbuilding Corporation (Russia) and, let us say, Norwegian yards?
