Surveys of Pacific salmons getting most true-to-life with drones and AI

Scientists from the All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography VNIRO are going to use artificial intelligence and drones to simplify surveys of Pacific salmon stocks, reports Megafishnet.com.

According to VNIRO, taking into account falling catches of salmon in the Russian Far East the institute will develop and adopt a program for additional study of the stocks’ condition. The surveys will take place not only at sea, but also onshore, and attract artificial intelligence and unmanned aerial vehicles, which VNIRO last year first tested for research work in Kamchatka and in the Khabarovsk Territory. The institute’s director Kirill Kolonchin says that this year 60 million rubles will be allocated to continue the stock surveys with drones and AI.

Such surveys will help quickly check the current condition of the stocks right before the regional commission on anadromous stocks gathers to discuss coming salmon season. In other words, the commission will see the fish running to spawning grounds and evaluate its condition in real time.
