SEASON’S FIRST CAPELIN TO AKRANES

Lundey NS was scheduled to dock at Akranes this afternoon with full tanks of capelin, the first landing of the season to Akranes. The fish were caught in three shots east of the Skagagrunn grounds.

According to skipper Arnthór Hjörleifsson, the intention had not been to land this trip at Akranes, but due to a malfunctioning block on board, the decision was taken to steam south to fetch the required spare parts and to fix the defect at Akranes.
‘It broke down twice during the trip and the first time we tried to weld it back together in Akureyri. That didn’t last long, but we managed to finish the trip with 1500 tonnes in three shots off the Skagagrunn. There’s plenty of life there over a wide area and it’s obvious that there’s a lot of capelin on the move. But it’s not easy to figure out how the capelin are travelling, and we also saw capelin further west as we were steaming to Akranes,’ he said. He commented that the capelin are fairly deep during the day but rise to the surface at dusk.
Several other vessels have been on the same grounds as Lundey, and Arnthór Hjörleifsson said that this morning they had all gone, most likely with good catches that need to be landed.
