Progress of Russian fisheries as per early April 2020

By April 8, 2020 the total volume of aquatic biological resources harvested by Russian fleets amounted to more than 1.5 million metric tons, 5.7% or 81,600 tonnes up on the corresponding result of last year.

In the Far East Fishery Basin the catch increased by 7.2% to more than 1.16 million tons. Pollock catches rose by 59,400 tonnes to 960 thousand tonnes, while cod catches jumped by 8,340 tonnes to 53,800 tonnes. The catch of Pacific herring increased by 5,000 tonnes to 60,900 tonnes.

In the North Fisheries Basin the Russian fleets harvested 144,200 tonnes, 4.7% up on last year. Cod catches decreased by 400 tonnes to 107,600 tons. Haddock catches increased by 3,450 tonnes to 20,200 tonnes.

In the Western Fisheries Basin catches rose by 1.2% on last year to 32,600 tonnes. Sprat catches decreased by 1,070 tonnes to 20,100 tonnes. Baltic herring catches increased by 1,500 tonnes to 11,200 tonnes.

In the Azov-Black Sea Fisheries Basin 21,500 tonnes were caught, on a par with last year. Catches of anchovy increased by 1,700 tonnes to 18,500 tonnes. Sprat catches amounted to 700 tonnes, 1,060 tonnes down on last year.

In the Volga-Caspian Fisheries Basin catches jumped by 41.1% to 10,000 tonnes. Catches of sprat amounted to 4,300 tonnes, 4,200 tonnes up on last year. The total harvest also included 3,900 tonnes of big and small fish, 1,300 tonnes less than last year. Catches of freshwater species rose by 20 tonnes to about 1,160 tonnes.

In the foreign zones the Russian fishing fleet harvested 79,200 tonnes, 11.5% down on last year. In the convention areas and the open part of the World Ocean, the Russian fishermen decreased their catch by 19.6% to 59,600 tonnes.
