GOOD BLUE WHITING FISHING

Lundey NS docked in its home port of Vopnafjördur this evening after over a 24-hour steam from blue whiting fishing grounds in Faroese waters. According to skipper Arnthór Hjörleifsson, they have around 1600 tonnes on board this trip.

‘Fishing has been up and down. There was some heavy fishing in the grey zone just south of the Faroese EEZ limits when we sailed from Akranes on Tuesday night. There was foul weather on the way that kept our speed down to seven to eight knots so we didn’t take out first haul until the morning of the first of May. By then the fishing had dropped off across the grey zone and the southern part of the Faroese zone. We tried in the separator area, where using a separator grid is mandatory, on the slope off the Faroe Bank. There was clearly plenty of blue whiting in the area, even though the marks we were seeing weren’t all that strong and we had a good haul after towing north along the edge. At the same time Faxi RE towed south and they also had a good haul,’ Arnthór Hjörleifsson said.

He commented that the blue whiting are now clearly shifting northwards and now the fish they are getting are smaller than in previous trips.
