FIRST SUMMER-SPAWNING HERRING TO VOPNAFJÖRDUR

‘We have between 900 and 1000 tonnes of herring on board that we had in four hauls south of the Látragrunn Shallows, deep west of Snæfellsnes,’ said Róbert Axelsson, chief mate on board Ingunn AK when we spoke to him earlier today. Ingunn was then steaming to Vopnafjördur with the first of this season’s Icelandic summer-spawning herring from the fishery that began last week.

Ingunn sailed from Reykjavík last Tuesday, following Jóna Edvalds SF which was already on the fishing grounds and which had started searching in the inlets around Stykkishólmur.

‘There was nothing in the sounds in Breidafjördur and it wasn’t until we were out here that we started to see marks. We were fishing for a day and a night, so this looks like a promising start to the season,’ he said.

The herring Ingunn caught in this trip is fairly large at an average of between 320 and 340 grammes. The fish appear to be in good condition after spawning.

Róbert Axelsson said that Lundey NS is now on fishing grounds west of Snæfellsnes and he expected Faxi RE to be sailing tomorrow. If there are no delays, then Ingunn is expected to be alongside at Vopnafjördur tomorrow night.
