December 7, 2020 14:46

The Russian fleets were engaged in pelagiс fishery in the Baltic Sea as well as bottom trawl fishery for cod and haddock in November 2020, reports Megafishnet.com.

According to FishNet.ru, in the southeastern part of the Baltic Sea the fishery conditions in November were often complicated by bad weather. Nevertheless, the fleet continued brisk pelagic fishery, with up to 20 small vessels operating on the grounds. The conditions for fishing operations were generally favorable, except for the days when the weather would not let the vessels go to the sea.

The total catch of pelagic fish in the month under analysis amounted to 3,400 tonnes, 1.4 thousand tons up on October. The main commercial species was sprat accounting for 75% of the total catch, the remaining share was made up by herring.

Cod and haddock

Bottom trawl fishery for cod and haddock in the area remained slow with only 11 trawlers taking part. The total harvest through November amounted to 300 tonnes, 100 tonnes year-on-year. The fleets mostly targeted European flounder (72%), while cod contributed only 28% to the catch.

Baltic herring

In the Gulf of Finland of the Baltic Sea (32nd subarea under ICES jurisdiction) up to 9 small trawlers were hunting for Baltic herring. During the period under review, they caught 2,200 tonnes of fish, mostly Baltic herring (95%). Up to 5% of sprat was harvested as by-catch.
