Baltic Sea catch and quota progress to December 2020
Russian fleets were engaged in pelagiс fishery in the Baltic Sea as well as bottom trawl fishery for cod and haddock in December 2020, reports Megafishnet.com.
According to Fishnet.ru, up to 24 small vessels coming from Kaliningrad-led West Fisheries were conducting pelagic fishery in the southeastern part of the Baltic Sea. The fishery situation was complicated by bad weather, therefore trawlers could not work every day, but when they could, the catch rates were favourable.
Total pelagic fish catch of the month amounted to 3,600 tonnes, 200 tonnes down on November. The main commercial species was sprat accounting for 68% of the total catch, the remaining share was made up by herring (32%).
Cod and European flounder
Bottom cod and European flounder trawl fishery in the area was conducted by up to 9 small trawlers coming from Kaliningrad. The fishery was weak and the total harvest through December amounted to 200 tonnes, 100 tonnes down year-on-year. The fleets mostly targeted European flounder (51%), while cod contributed 49% to the catch.
Baltic herring
In the Gulf of Finland of the Baltic Sea (subarea 32 under ICES jurisdiction) up to 11 small trawlers from Kaliningrad were hunting for Baltic herring. The fishery conditions were favourable. During the period under review, they caught 3,000 tonnes of fish (800 tonnes), mostly Baltic herring (90%) and up to 10% of sprat.
Russia’s total catch in the southeastern part of the Baltic Sea and in the Gulf of Finland from January to December 2020 amounted to 45,700 tonnes of sprat and 26,000 tonnes of herring.
