Baltic Sea catch and quota progress in January 2021
Russian fleets were engaged in Baltic Sea pelagiс fishery as well as bottom trawl fishery for cod and haddock in January 2021, reports Megafishnet.com.
According to Fishnet.ru, up to 30 vessels coming from Kaliningrad-led West Fisheries were conducting pelagic fishery in the southeastern part of the Baltic Sea.
Total pelagic fish catch of the month amounted to 9,100 tonnes. The main commercial species was sprat accounting for 89% of the total catch, the remaining share was made up by herring (11%). A slight bycatch of cod was also reported. The bottom fishery of cod and European flounder in the area was practically never opened in January.
Baltic herring
In the Gulf of Finland of the Baltic Sea (subarea 32 under ICES jurisdiction) up to 7 small trawlers from Kaliningrad were hunting for Baltic herring. The fishery conditions were favourable. During the period under review, they caught 2,600 tonnes of fish, mostly Baltic herring (95%) and up to 5% of sprat.
Russia’s total catch in the southeastern part of the Baltic Sea and in the Gulf of Finland in January 2021 amounted to 8,200 tonnes of sprat and 3,500 tonnes of herring.
