Brim hf. has become the main sponsor of the environmental organisation The Blue Army that has for 25 years fought the plastic pollution of the ocean by cleaning the coastline and through encouragement increased public awareness of this important issue. 

The Governor of Primorsky Krai Oleg Kozhemyako visited the site of the Russian Pollock fish processing plant, which the Russian Fishery Company (RFC) is building on the territory of the “Nadezhdinskaya” priority development area (Primorsky Krai). The commissioning of the plant is scheduled for September 1 of this year.

‘Most of this trip we were on the area known as the landing strip, or the Dritvík Shallows, and we allowed ourselves some time to go south to the Skerja Deeps and the Mountains. We did well for cod on the Landing strip, and also had some redfish and saithe,’ said skipper Friðleifur Einarsson when Helga María docked at the beginning of the week with 150 tonnes on board.

At the Admiralty Shipyards (St. Petersburg) the lead vessel of the series of supertrawlers for the Russian Fishery Company was lauched in the end of March 2020. ‘Catches have been acceptable. Saithe is as elusive as ever. We’ve done well avoiding cod, but we can’t say the same about haddock. It shows up everywhere as by-catch,’ said Jóhannes Ellert Eiríksson, skipper of Brim’s fresher trawler Viðey.

While people in Iceland are already tired of the exceptional bad weather that has hit the country over the first few weeks of the year, the wind also blows hard elsewhere, as the pelagic vessel crews hoping to fish for blue whiting in Faroese waters have found.

‘In general, we can say that catches have been reasonable. But there’s no getting away from the fact that cod have been a challenge. There have been some good showings of cod, but they tend to be short. In between those we just have to search as widely as we can,’ said Akurey’s skipper Eiríkur Jónsson.
