HB Grandi’s pelagic factory in Vopnafjördur completed landing a 600 tonne trip from Venus on Wednesday, caught in two days at sea, and now Víkingur is alongside with much the same amount of fish after a similar trip.
It is safe to say that the Icelandic men's national football team has inspired football fans around the world during the European Championships this summer. The Icelandic supporters have also received a lot of attention and have become renowned for their iconic, so called Viking chant, "Huh!". Several others have had a go, just as the French team did after they ensured their place in the final.
This summer’s mackerel season is underway with both of HB Grandi’s pelagic vessels on the fishing grounds already. Víkingur sailed from Akranes on Monday night and is now fishing off the south coast. Venus sailed on Wednesday afternoon and is now fishing south-west of the Westmann Islands. According to Víkingur’s skipper, Albert Sveinsson, the season has got off to a slow start.
HB Grandi’s trawler Helga María docked in Reykjavík earlier this after a trip to fishing grounds off the Westfjords. According to Ævar Pálsson, who sailed as skipper for this trip, they finished with a reasonable catch of mainly saithe, redfish and cod.
HB Grandi’s freezer trawler Therney is now fishing east of the Hali fishing grounds and according to skipper Ægir Franzsson, there has been some good fishing on saithe over the last days. Therney shifted to the Westfjords grounds after finishing its Irminger redfish quota for the year on the Reykjanes Ridge, and this year it took Therney only ten days to catch its quota
Around 150 people took part in HB Grandi’s Esja walk last weekend. The company’s staff were invited to take part and coaches were laid on to bring them from locations in Akranes and from Norðurgarður in Reykjavík. There are hopes that the event can be repeated, as the day was seen to be a highly successful outing.
HB Grandi’s trawler Ásbjörn is fishing off the Westfjords and we managed to reach skipper Friðleifur Einarsson with the trawler in a position on the Hali grounds west of the pack ice between Greenland and Iceland. He said that they are hoping that before the trip is over the saithe will start to collect around the food that concentrates where warm and cold currents meet
‘We spend a decent part of every trip searching for saithe in amounts that are worth fishing. That’s something that hasn’t been very successful, but there’s no problem taking our allocation of golden redfish and cod,’ said Magnús Kristjánsson, skipper of HB Grandi’s trawler Sturlaugur H Bödvarsson.
Venus and Víkingur will return to fishing blue whiting and have 26.150 tonnes of quota left to be caught. This became clear following the Fisheries Minister’s decision to increase the quota by 39,000 tonnes, of which 7700 tonnes falls to the HB Grandi fleet ...
Pelagic vessels Venus and Víkingur are now in port in Reykjavík after having been tied up at Akranes since the end of the capelin season. ‘Before True North contacted HB Grandi about the ships, they had been in touch with the Akranes mayor’s office about filming in the cement factory building. There will also be scenes filmed at the harbour area that start on the 14th of April and take two days. Then there are two days scheduled for filming in Hvalfjördur,’ he said and added that Venus and Víkingur were simply too big for the harbour scenes and had to go...
