Vladivostok-based Crab Catchers Association extends activities to Murmansk
Crab Catchers Association (CCA) based in Vladivostok has widened the geography of operations to Murmansk, another important region for red king crab and snow crab fishery in Russia, reports Megafishnet.com.
According to the Single State Register of Legal Entities, from December 21, 2020 the organization has removed the reference to Far East from its name because of getting Murmansk-based Antey Sever LLC onboard. Antey Sever conducts crab fishery in the Barents Sea and it is a subsidiary of Antey Group with headquarters in Vladivostok.
Fisheries improvement
CCA has been actively working on fishery improvement for some last ten years.
In the middle of 2011 Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP) has initiated contact with the then Far East Crab Catchers Association (CCA). Later the Parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).
The MOU’s general objective was to “work together toward the establishment a Fisheries Improvement Project (FIP) to improve Far East crab fisheries with participation of crab catchers and international major buyers of Russian Far East crab products.”
The FIP was publicly announced at the end of 2011. The initial 2012–2013 work plan, jointly agreed by CCA and SFP, was completed. The follow up 2014-2016 work plan was also completed.
In 2016 CCA has successfully passed pre-assessment of the 1st set of certification units on their compliance with criteria of the Marine Stewardship Council.
The 1st set of certification units selected is as follows: Red king crab and Blue king crab for West Kamchatka as well as Red king crab and Tanner (Bairdi) snow crab for Kamchatka-Kurils area.
From 1st October 2016 the Crab Catchers Association has assumed full responsibility for the FIP implementation including, in particular, publication of FIP public reports. SFP continues to support the project in its role as a FIP stakeholder.
