Spanish, Thai companies join International Seafood Sustainability Foundation

The International Seafood Sustainability Foundation (ISSF) on 12 July 2011 announced that a Spanish processor and a cannery from Thailand are the latest to join its campaign to improve tuna sustainability, according to Russian Fish Insider Report published by http://www.megafishnet.com/.

The addition of Salica Industria Alimentaria and R.S. Cannery brings the number of ISSF member companies to 15.

Salica's main presence is in European markets under private labels, as well as its own brands Campos and Bachi. R.S. Cannery supplies tuna products to the United States, Canada, Europe, Japan and the Middle East. The companies successfully completed an audit to ensure compliance with ISSF standards, including the maintenance of a credible traceability scheme.

"Industry participation is paramount as we move toward even more sustainable fishing practices and improved management and we welcome Salica and R.S. Cannery's participation," said ISSF President Susan Jackson. "We work with partners in every region of the world and that is important to our approach. Tuna sustainability is a global concern and attacking challenges market-by-market or fishery-by-fishery would leave us with a patchwork of approaches. Coordinating our efforts among different stakeholders from around the world brings a well-rounded cache of ideas and knowledge to help deliver solutions that can be applied consistently."
