Pilot phase of $40 million crab factory taking off in Murmansk

A pilot stage of onshore crab processing operation has been launched in Murmansk to be upgrade to a larger capacity later, reports Megafishnet.com.

More specifically, up to 10 tons of cooked and frozen products can be produced per day by the pilot phase of the factory of Alliance fish LLC – the first enterprise for processing live crab in Murmansk.

The company works in conjunction with the Far Eastern group of companies "Antey", which, among other activities, is engaged in the capture of crab in the Northern basin. Live crabs are delivered to the shore by crab-catching vessels and kept in special tanks with sea water, from where they are delivered to the factory for processing into cooked and frozen semi-finished products. Thus, Antey and its partners were the first to establish full – cycle crab production in the Murmansk region reaching from fishing to boxes with finished products.

Additionally, five crabbers are being built to work here and Murmansk Governor has promised help with such issues as land and residency in the Arctic (economic) zone.

The commissioned factory in Murmansk is only a pilot project, the owners emphasize. Its main task is to work out the process and train specialists. The plan is to create a large modern production facility in the Arctic region with an investment volume of about three billion rubles. The estimated capacity of the plant is to process up to 50 tons per day with a one-time storage capacity of up to 200 tons of live crab. At the same time, production will be almost waste-free. According to Ivan Mikhnov, President of the Antey group of companies, the project will be fully implemented within two to three years.

The main part of the production of the big crab factory will be exported. As for domestic demand in the region, the stake is on amateur crab fishing, the permit for which will come into force in August 2021.
