Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development - Vu Van Tam said, by 2020, farmed seafood output is expected to reach 4-5 million tons, up from 2,5 million tons currently while maintaining farming area of 1.1 million ha as now and focus on improving the capacity, quality, and efficiency in sustainable development direction. According to development direction by 2020, MARD will pay attention to developing some key farmed objects with prosperous market and competitive advantages and diversifying farmed objects but complying with the planning; considering market signs as commands and enterprises as shock troops. Enterprises must be the leader to look for and orient the market; be the organizer in the central position linking with farmers to form production chain from breeding ponds to markets in order to success as pangasius.
At present, farmed seafood accounts for over 50% of Vietnam's exported seafood output; in which, pangasius and shrimp represent mostly. However, these 2 products are facing obstacles and barriers from imported markets which require Vietnamese exporters to diversify farmed seafood species in order to strengthen export and mitigate risks.
In aquaculture development orientation by 2020, MARD expects to culture some key farmed objects with large production such as pangasius, brackish water shrimp, mollusk, farmed marine fish, tilapia, seaweed, scampi.
