Annual seafood exports already equal record year of 2009

At the end of October, exports of Norwegian seafood for the year to date were already close to equalling the total for the whole of the record year of 2009. In the first 10 months of 2010, Norwegian seafood exports totalled NOK 43.1 billion, compared to an export figure for the whole of 2009 of NOK 44.6 billion, reports www.megafishnet.com with reference to NSEC.

In October alone, Norwegian seafood exports were valued at NOK 5.9 billion. This is an increase of NOK 1 billion or 21% compared to October last year, according to the latest figures from the Norwegian Seafood Export Council.

"Strong growth in mackerel exports to Japan have helped boost Norwegian seafood exports in October. In addition, continuing record sales of Norwegian Salmon provide a solid foundation for seafood exports from Norway as we go forward, says Egil Ove Sundheim, director of market information with the Norwegian Seafood Export Council."

Monthly Norwegian Salmon exports top NOK 3 billion

For the first time ever, exports of Norwegian Salmon have topped NOK 3 billion in a single month. This is an increase of NOK 843 million or 38% compared to the same month last year. This year to date, exports of Norwegian Salmon total NOK 24.9 billion, up by NOK 5.9 billion compared to the same period last year. This means that the total export value of Norwegian Salmon for the whole of 2009 has already been surpassed. This strong growth is accounted for by a combination of continued high prices and record export volumes.
Exports of Norwegian Fjord Trout in October increased in value by NOK 173 million. For the 10 months to the end of October, compared to the same period last year this marks a reduction of NOK 341 million to a total value of NOK 1.3 billion.

France and Poland are the biggest markets for Norwegian Salmon. Exports of Norwegian Salmon to Russia in October increased in value by 106% to total NOK 322 million, making Russia the third biggest market for Norwegian Salmon.
Russia and China are the biggest export markets for Norwegian Fjord Trout.

Mackerel exports up, herring exports down

In October, exports of mackerel increased in value by NOK 247 million or 40% to a total of NOK 865 million. For the year to date, total mackerel exports are valued at NOK 2.7 billion, an increase of no less than NOK 1.1 billion.
October saw exports of herring fall in value by NOK 163 million to a total of NOK 381 million. This year to date, the value of herring exports totals NOK 2.6 billion, down by NOK 337 million or 11% from the same period last year.
Japan is the biggest market for mackerel from Norway, with exports for the year to date totalling NOK 918 million, up by NOK 537 million on the same period in 2009. The biggest export market for Norwegian herring is Russia, despite a drop in the value of exports by about 10% to NOK 685 million. The second biggest market for Norwegian herring is Germany, where exports are up in value by 18% to a total of NOK 312 million.

Growth in clipfish exports, fall in salted fish exports

Exports of clipfish in October increased in value by 20% or NOK 85 million to a total of NOK 517 million. For the year to date, exports of clipfish total NOK 2.8 billion, an increase of NOK 340 million or 14%. Exports of salted fish fell by NOK 49 million in October to almost half the value of exports in October 2009. However, for the January-October period as a whole, exports have increased in value by NOK 95 million or 15% to a total of NOK 738 million.
